Citation readiness describes how well a page is prepared to be understood and referenced in an AI answer. Improving it is mostly careful editing: stating answers directly, naming things clearly, and supporting claims. This guide walks through a repeatable process and shows illustrative examples of each kind of edit.
Start with the questions, not the page
Readiness only matters for questions people actually ask. Before editing anything, list the buyer questions a page should answer. Good sources are sales call notes, support tickets, proposal requests, and search console queries. Write each question in the buyer's own words.
Then map each question to one page. If a question has no natural home, that is a content gap, and adding a section is usually more valuable than polishing an existing page.
Lead with the answer
The most common weakness is a buried answer. Introductions that restate the question or describe the company delay the information an assistant needs.
Before
Choosing the right plan can be a big decision, and every business is different. That's why we've put together a range of options designed to support you at every stage.
After
Plans start at $49 per month for one location and include online booking, reminders, and basic reporting. Multi location plans add shared staff calendars and are priced per location.
The edited version answers "how much does it cost and what is included" in two sentences. The prices and features in this example are invented for illustration.
Name and define everything important
Replace pronouns and vague labels with specific names at least once in each section, because sections are often read in isolation. Define terms the first time you use them, and state the category your business belongs to.
- Use the full business and product name, not only "we" or "the platform".
- State who the offer is for and where it is available.
- Spell out abbreviations on first use.
- Keep naming consistent across pages, profiles, and directories.
Support claims with specifics
Statements like "industry leading" or "trusted by thousands" give an AI system nothing it can verify and give a reader nothing to act on. Replace them with details you can stand behind: what is included, how a process works, which standards you follow, and who reviewed the content.

After
Each project is reviewed by a licensed structural engineer before permits are filed. Typical residential reviews are completed within ten business days of receiving complete drawings.
Only publish numbers and timelines you can support. If a figure varies, say what it depends on.
Structure sections so they stand alone
- Write headings as the questions or topics they answer.
- Keep paragraphs short and focused on one idea.
- Use lists for steps and inclusions, and tables for comparisons.
- Add a visible author or reviewer and a review date.
Measure the change honestly
- Score the page and save recorded responses for its questions before editing.
- Make a documented set of changes and note the date.
- Rescore to confirm the rubric reflects the edits.
- Repeat the same questions with the same providers and models after a reasonable interval.
- Compare full responses, and record results that did not change as carefully as those that did.
A higher readiness score shows the page better meets the rubric. It does not guarantee a mention or link, and a change in citations alone does not prove revenue impact. Track leads and sales separately.
